Working to Address Affordability in Health Care Coverage
Health care costs impact you personally in your daily life. We know that any increase in health care costs could cause stress and economic insecurity for you and your family. This is why we advocate for public policies that protect your health care and advocate for ways to make health care more affordable while ensuring that the quality of your health care coverage is preserved.

Advocating for Policies to Make Prescription Drug and Hospital Costs More Affordable
Prescription drug prices continue to skyrocket and are now the fastest growing contributor to health care premiums and health care costs for Californians. In fact, since 2017, prescription drug spending in California has increased by over 56%.
Hospital and nursing home care costs rose about 88% from 2009 through 2024, roughly double the overall inflation rate

Opposing legislative health care mandates that drive up health care premiums for all
ALL Californians pay in higher premiums when new mandates are enacted. In 2025, proposed benefit mandates would cumulatively drive up health plan premiums by hundreds of millions of dollars in the first year alone. At the same time, California leaders are advancing a new Essential Health Benefits package that will increase premiums by an additional $500 million according to our internal estimate. Health plans are urging legislators to weigh the full, long-term cost of proposed mandates and an expanded, costlier Essential Health Benefits package to ensure they align with the state’s affordability goals.

Supporting the Office of Health Care Affordability’s (OHCA) mission of slowing health care spending growth and its calls for transparency and accountability
OHCA is tasked under state law to address health care affordability, with solutions being developed in partnership with health plans and other stakeholders.
